Application profile
Factories, larger commercial buildings, hospitals and multi-tenant sites may use this range depending on critical load.
Electrical engineering
Breaker size, cables, ATS, earthing, neutral arrangement and protection should be designed around generator characteristics.
Mechanical engineering
Ventilation, radiator discharge, exhaust backpressure, fuel and maintenance clearance are core design items.
Buyer checklist
Verify the complete project scope
Confirm exact equipment model and rating, scope of supply, installation responsibility, commissioning, warranty, spare-parts path and after-sales support. For industrial power projects, the lowest initial price is not automatically the lowest lifecycle risk.
Advanced buyer notes
For meaningful comparison, normalize the exact technical specification, installation and commissioning scope, written warranty, spare-parts route and after-sales response. Search rankings, company names and import volume are useful discovery signals, but the project decision should be based on equivalent technical offers.
Research methodology and freshness
PS Group research pages separates company claims, public third-party data and general engineering guidance. Dataset-specific figures are labelled with their scope; competitor names are used for buyer comparison without implying affiliation; and technical values are treated as references until verified against the final project and manufacturer documentation. When to move up or down in capacity
Move to a larger set when the calculated step load, motor starting, ambient derating or planned growth exceeds the selected generator’s transient capability. Move smaller only when a verified load schedule shows the larger unit would spend long periods at very light load. The final selection should be checked against the actual manufacturer data sheet.
What changes the quotation
A useful quotation identifies the engine model, alternator, controller, breaker, batteries and charger, fuel arrangement, open or acoustic enclosure, ATS or synchronizing scope, transport, installation, exhaust, cabling, earthing, commissioning and warranty. Two quotations at the same kVA can therefore be materially different.
250 kVA technical reference
| Reference | Approximate value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rated apparent power | 250 kVA | Use the actual manufacturer standby/prime rating when comparing quotations. |
| Power at 0.8 PF | 200 kW | Useful conversion only; it is not a substitute for load analysis. |
| 3-phase current at 400 V | 361 A | Approximate full-load current; switchgear and cable design need project calculations. |
| Duty | Standby or prime | The same engine/genset can carry different published ratings by duty. |
Motor starting, lift motors, pumps, compressors, UPS rectifiers and future expansion can make the required generator larger than a simple kW-to-kVA conversion suggests.
Frequently asked questions
How many kW is 250 kVA?
At 0.8 power factor, approximately 200 kW.
Can it start large motors?
Possibly, but voltage/frequency dip during starting must be checked.
Do I need a generator room?
Open sets generally do; silent/containerized systems can simplify external installation.
